Bertil Roos Race Series: Round 8 at Pocono South Track

Blakeslee, PA
10/12/10

Race 8, the final race of the 2010 Bertil Roos Race Series took place October 9, 2010 at Pocono Raceway’s South Track and saw the Championship and Rookie Titles come down to the wire.

Group 1 Race 1:
Race 1 started with title contenders Stuart Rettie and Kevin Anderson in 3rd and 4th respectively behind pole position Toulouse Lafond and 2nd place Gary Peck. When the green flag flew it was Toulouse that jumped to an immediate lead while behind him Peter Cellino and Mike Abboud had a coming together which saw Peter going a lap down. At the front Toulouse was leading but a missed shift exiting onto the oval saw him spin off which lead to him having to come in to have the car checked. This left Gary Peck leading with Stuart and Kevin battling behind him. Stuart would eventually get the better of Kevin and set off after Gary. Gary took the pressure well and when the checkered flag dropped it was Gary taking his first race win with Roos followed by Stuart in 2nd, Kevin in 3rd, Dave long in 4th and Joe Homa in 5th.

Group 1 Race 2:
At the start of Race 2 Gary lead for the first lap but on lap 2 multiple race incidents would occur in turn one to shuffle the order. The first of which saw Gary and Kevin coming together into turn 1 then Stuart and Gary having slight contact out of the corner as Stuart tried to get underneath into turn 2, all cars would continue on. Behind that in the chaos that ensued Peter and Joe Homa had a coming together which saw Peter’s race ending, Joe would continue. Back at the front it was Kevin leading followed by Stuart and then Gary. The position would stay like this till lap 8 when Stuart would make his move on Kevin and take the lead in the same lap Gary would also follow through and pass Kevin for 2nd.  Positions would stand till the end with Stuart in 1st, Gary have another great showing with 2nd, Kevin 3rd, Dave long 4th, and Mike Abboud 5th.

Group 2 Race 1:
Group 2 had another 2 title contenders in the group with Tim Nichols on pole And Mark Vultaggio starting 3rd, the 2 where split by Young Paul Alspach who, like Gary in group 1, was in the running for Rookie of the Year. At the start of the race it was Tim who jumped to a dominating lead that he would hold till the end, followed by Mark with Paul close behind. The battle for this race however was for the 5th spot with Zane Gibbs, Phil Lambert and Bruce Hamilton. The 3 would stay in a close group but at the end in was Phil edging out Zane and Bruce for 5th, Andy Ourant came in a solid 4th, Paul finished 3rd, Mark 2nd and Tim in first.

Group 2 Race 2:
After a waved off start Race 2 picked up where the first ended, Tim jumped into another large lead followed by Mark. The two would hold these positions for the remainder of the race. Paul Alspach had an odd moment when the seat in his car moved which saw him having to pit to get it fixed, this would put him a lap down. With Paul’s problem Andy Ourant and Zane Gibbs were promoted to battling for 3rd place. The two rookie drivers would have a race long battle that would be decided on the final lap. On that lap, going into the hairpin, a lapped car made a mistake under braking and would get into Andy promoting Zane to 3rd. At the line it was Tim in 1st, Mark 2nd, Zane 3rd, Bruce 4th and Andy dropping to 5th.

Championship Wrap Up

This season was one of the most exciting and down to the wire seasons to date for the Bertil Roos Race Series. At the start of the weekend 4 drivers where in the running for the championship and separated by only 9 points and the Rookie of the Year title almost as close. When the checkered flag dropped on the season the title was decided by 1 point. Tim Nichols, by winning his race 1 heat race scored one more point than Stuart Rettie giving Tim his second Bertil Roos Race Series Championship. It was just as surprising for the Rookie of the Year honors. Going into the race Alastair McEwan was leading with Gary only 2 points behind and Paul only 11 points behind Alastair as well. When the points were calculated and all drop races factored, it was to Paul Alspach’s surprise when his name was announced as the 2010 Bertil Roos Rookie of the Year. Finally, the Hard Charger award goes to Alastair McEwan for most position gains from qualifying position to final race 2 positions.

The 2010 season was a good one for the Bertil Roos Race Series, 31 people took part in atleast 1 race season, 15 of which were classed as rookies. There were 8 different feature race winners this year and 3 of which, Stuart Rettie, Toulouse Lafond, and Paul Alspach were first time winners. With the trend of having more and more drivers coming into the series to do a race the Bertil Roos School is looking to have an even more exciting 2011 season. Even though the Flag has dropped for the regular season the racing is far from over. On November 19 and 21, 2010 the Bertil Roos Racing School will be holding its 5th Annual Bertil Roos Enduro at Savannah Georgia. This event is open to all Roos Series Drivers, all Roos 5 Day and 2 Day Advanced School graduates and any driver with a wheel to wheel license from a recognized organization or sanctioning body.
