Under sunny skies at Pocono Speedway the Bertil Roos Race Series held its 7th race of the season on the North Track and make-up race on the South Track.
September 18, 2009 North Track (Race 7)
Group 1:
Race 1
A day long battle between pole sitter Mark Vultaggio and sixth place starter Alan Antaki started in Race 1 when Alan came from through the field to take the lead on lap 6. With 6 lead changes, the last occurring on the last lap, Mark pulled ahead to take victory in Race 1. Not to be over looked however, was the battle for 3rd and 4th between Dave Long and Stuart Rettie with Stuart getting the better of Dave and the good job of the young Rookie Paul Alspach who drove a clean race, his second with the Roos Race Series.
Race 2
The second race picked up right as Race 1 left off with Mark and Alan fighting for first. The battle behind them however was picking up for 3rd as Dave and Stuart were joined by Paul. On lap 6 Dave made an error and went off track Paul was in position to capitalize and grabbed 4th while Dave fought his way back to 5th. In the end though, it was Mark that picked up the win over Alan for Group 1.
Group 2:
Race 1
In the second group, last year’s champion, Jonathan Scarallo revisited the series after a year of racing in the Pro Formula 2000 Championship and lost none of his form. After being overtaken by Tim Nichols on lap 1 Jonathan stayed close while battling with series veteran Joe Homa. Jonathan regained the lead with a move in Valvoline the result of which saw Tim’s tire being cut and unable to continue. Jonathan held off Joe in the final laps to claim victory.
Race 2
In the second race for Group 2 Jonathan lead the race from start to finish but all eyes were on Tim Nichols as he charged back through the field. After starting last Tim made his way back to 2nd place on lap 15 and stayed there for the remainder.
September 19, 2009 South Track (Race 3 make-up)
Group 1:
Race 1
At the end of Race 1, the names seemed similar to the North Track race but this time, it was Frank Vultaggio holding off a charging Alan Antaki to claim the win. He took the position over from pole sitter Tim Nichols on lap 6. A sign of possible things to come, in the series, came in the form of Paul Alspach who in his third race weekend with Roos claimed 3rd place.
Race 2
After an exciting start at Turn 1, which saw Tim going off in avoidance of an incident between Paul and series veteran Glenn Brooks , in which Paul’s front tire was cut, Alan and Frank began their race for the win. Behind the two, Paul, with a flat front tire was managing to hold off the pack until he was called in to change it. After 4 lead changes, Frank held off Alan to claim the win and continue his lead in the championship.
Group 2
Race 1
Once again Mark Vultaggio’s name topped the time charts as he took pole for Group 2, and continuing his form from the north track was Dave Long. The two of which would have a close nose to tail battle that saw Mark taking the win and behind them was Joe Homa in a close 3rd.
Race 2
The action heated up mid way through the race when Mark and Dave made contact in Turn 1, which saw Joe Home going through into the lead. Joe would hold the position from lap 12 till the end claiming victory on the South Track. Both Mark and Dave would recover to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively with both scoring points in an effort to catch Frank in the Championship.
